The Greek peninsula , at southeast of Europe, with an area of 131,944 square kilometers, consists of the mainland Greece (Attika, Peloponnese, Central Greece, Thessaly, Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace) and the Aegean and Ionian Islands. Geographically, the Greek peninsula is part of Europe, because it is the extreme south tip of the Balkan Peninsula. The small group of Ionian islands, in the Ionian Sea, marks the western boundary of Greece. On the contrary, there are several islands in the Aegean Sea, which in some places form groups of islands, such as the northern and eastern Aegean islands, the Sporades, the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, while other isolated islands are to the South, such as the Crete island.
